This quarter started off with our awarding of our first ever high school scholarship. We were able to award $1000 to David Chamberlain, a student of Mat-Su Central. The young man plans to go to UAA and study mechanical engineering. It was wonderful to be able to put a face on all the hard work we have been doing for the past 3 years.

We joined the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce and will be able to network with other member to work on some bigger projects in the area. This also gives us an opportunity to present our project plans to the members.

Developing a new fund raiser for the winter, a bowling tournament This year we are making an effort to compile a “how-to” book with basic information about each of our projects so that the info can pass from one chairman to the next without having to reinvent anything. This promises to be a long process but we will keep working on it as each project passes. Also, beginning an inventory of club property and location.

Another new project this year is our “Gardening for Good”. Several members are working with a local church to grow vegetables that will be donated to our local food pantry.

We have ordered Peace Poster Contest Kits and have made a firm commitment to this project. Work on it will begin in August when school starts.

Wasilla Lions Club took part in Wasilla’s 4th of July celebration. We had two PET scooters in the parade and then set up the vision screening trailer on the park strip for the day.

We will be manning the vision trailer one day at the fair as well as taking a shift collecting food for the food pantry. Our members also take part in the recycling project throughout the fairgrounds.

Proud to say that our club jumped in to assist a local effort to raise funds for a
person who needed to move “outside” to get on a lung-transplant list. We were
able to help with our “expertise” in spaghetti dinner making and serving.

The City of Wasilla has asked that our club adopt one of the small parks in the area. No decision made on this yet, but it will be discussed at our next meeting.

Sorry to report that we lost one of our members this quarter. John Taylor passed away on June 25. The Lions Club were awesome in support of the family and made a wonderful presentation at the memorial service.
