Times flies as it seems like the holidays were just a few days ago. It is that time of year again for the Annual Eagle River Lions FREE Kids Ice Fishing Derby! This will be the 20th Anniversary of this event. Lions have seen thousands of young children with red cheeks and smiling proud faces, holding up their fish to have them measured with the hopes of getting a great prize.
The Eagle River Lions membership comes out strong to pre-drill hundreds of holes in the ice and to help coach the kids who are new to ice fishing. Many military families attend this event when a significant other is deployed. The Lions love to introduce new people to the fun of ice fishing and the joy of being in the great outdoors. Eagle River Lions provide all needed fishing equipment and bait free. There will also be free hot chocolate, hot dogs and hamburgers available. Boondock’s Sporting Goods Store sponsors the poles, bait and prizes for all age groups. The Palmer Elks Lodge on the edge of Finger Lake has graciously allowed use of its parking lot for overflow parking, so please be courteous of their property.
Free Kids Ice Fishing Derby is on Saturday, March 18 from noon to 3 p.m. on Finger Lake in Palmer. If you have any questions feel free to call Lion Todd Gallant (907) 854-0185. Directions to the ice fishing derby are on flyers available in Boondock’s Sporting Goods Store; please thank them for being a key sponsor to this great community event.
