Hard to believe that yet another year of school is almost done. Spring Break is here and time for those seniors to be getting their scholarship folders into their counselors. Yes, I know there is several feet of snow on the ground. But that is Alaska.
The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club is a service organization that helps many groups in the Chugiak-Eagle River Area. Our main mission is to provide community service and aid to anyone in need in our community. We accomplish this though the giving of our time, raising money through fundraising events and “hands on” service projects.
We provide scholarships for high school graduates and community members who would like to continue with their education and are in need of financial help. Several of our members review the scholarship folders each year at the local high schools and recommend recipients. We also have an application for community members to submit to our club who are already out of school but would like to further their education. Generally, we donate around $15,000.00 per year, but the amount can vary each year depending on our fundraising. This scholarship is what we call a continuing education scholarship. What we mean by this is seniors who receive this scholarship have the ability to reapply for the next 3 years to receive additions funding.
The Sleeping Lady Lions also give out “The Vi Thomson Memorial Scholarship.” This scholarship is given out in memory of former Lion’s member Vi Thomson. It is given out to seniors at Chugiak and Eagle River High Schools, who give of themselves in community service. Vi Thomson became an American Citizen in 1976, after growing up in Germany. When she was 14, she and her family escaped East Germany and lived in a refugee camp in West Berlin for two years, until they could find jobs and adequate housing. Because of this she was unable to go on to college to fulfill her dream of becoming a Pediatrician. Vi always felt that education was something that everyone should have a chance to get, and being involved in the scholarship program was her way of granting that. Her family donates $5000 per year to be given out to deserving seniors.
Get your scholarship folders into the high schools prior to April 1st. Our community will be in the schools the first week of April.
